1 John 5:18
I
am glad we can actually know things. With the advent of Google searches we can
know so much and yet know so little. The knowledge is available, but we must
take the opportunity to learn it, to explore, to gather and partake. But even
if we have head knowledge, we probably shouldn’t do surgery unless we have been
to medical school and graduated!
We
all have areas of struggle in our walk with Jesus. We all have our particular
weaknesses and trouble spots, places that we continue to struggle with
obedience. The struggles may be internal struggles with our thought life or
external struggles in walking out our faith. It may be our attitude toward a
particular person or group of people, or perhaps a habit that continues to trip
us up. We all have points of weakness.
The
problem arises when we yield to these weaknesses without any remorse. We step
on the landmine and don’t even notice that our spiritual legs have been blown
off. We act as if everything is fine, that we don’t need the LORD’s help and
that life continues as usual. All the while, other people can see our missing
legs. They see the sin we are wearing. They see our blind spots and try to help
us, but we refuse their help.
Our
life must reflect His life. If our life is filled with habitual sin, then we
must question our own position in Christ. If there is no godly sorrow when sin
is part of our life, then we need to honestly ask ourselves if the Holy Spirit
is present in our lives.
When
we yield to obedience, then Jesus is able to keep us safe. He becomes our
protection. It is not that bad things have to flee, but that our eternal
position and spiritual future are secured by His payment. It is impossible for
Satan or any of his demons to hinder that spiritual and eternal connection. We
may die prematurely by earthly standards, but if we are in Christ, we live
forever. Life isn’t cut short; heavenly life is begun early.
Our
goal in life is to reject the sin and pick up obedience. And you can’t hold
onto both at the same time. Where are you in this process? What do you need to
put down? What do you need to pick up?
