Col 1:16-17 & Heb 1:3, 10
Physicists struggle to find out what keeps
it all together. They keep looking for the missing particle which they say will
demonstrate how it all fits together. Countless money and brain power have been
spent, and some really interesting things have been discovered. From my limited
understanding, the physics of the universe don’t work unless there are some
missing pieces holding it together. So they are looking for those “other”
particles that help it work.
Scripture says that Jesus holds things
together. I don’t want to discourage the physicists from their pursuit, but I
have a feeling the more they look, the more they will find. And the more they
find, the more questions they will have. Now whether God uses some particle to
hold it together or He allows some mystery, unknown force to do His work, He is
behind it all. The physicist still can’t answer the question about the origin
of it all.
What does that mean to you and me as we live
our lives? First, Jesus has our back. Since everything is held together by Him,
nothing takes Him by surprise. Even the smallest atomic particle’s trajectory
is known to Him. He is not just involved with the big issues in life, He is
involved in the smallest details. We can breathe a sigh of relief. Things are
not out of control. The universe is not spinning randomly toward destruction.
He is involved in all the details, accomplishing His will.
This also means that God is not way out
there in Heaven somewhere far away. He is right here. He is present holding it
all together. So when we pray, He is right here to hear. He is also right here
to answer. He doesn’t have to travel to be involved in our lives. He is already
here.
Jesus is also Creator. This is something
that only God can be and do. This is one of the things that Jesus lays claim to
that are the prerogative of God only. And yet, Jesus lays claim to it. We have
the choice to believe the claim or not believe the claim. We can examine the
evidence and choose to believe the option that has the most evidence. Nothing
is 100%. We can’t know everything about anything, so we live in a world of
belief. We gather the knowledge we can, and then we step out having made the
choice that makes the most sense at that moment.
